Kansas City trash and recycling pickup has been canceled because of last weekend’s snow and ice. While crews focus on treating roads, here’s the latest on trash pickup.

The weather service says Kansas City has a low chance, less than 40%, of a dusting of snow and less than a 2% chance of seeing an inch of snow. Counties on the southern border of the Kansas City forecast area — Pettis, Henry, Bates and Linn counties — and surrounding areas are expected to see higher snowfall amounts.

Americans are under winter weather alerts as a major storm threatens much of the U.S. City Manager Brian Platt said, “This is going to be one of the most historic, significant storms Kansas City has ever seen.

Kansas City, Mo., received nearly a foot of snow over in a single day, forcing road and air traffic to come to a halt. NBC News' Maggie Vespa reports why officials are saying it will take a few days to clean out the snow.

While the snowstorm closed many Kansas City restaurants and kept diners at home, one short-staffed kitchen offered a special soup service after the blizzard. It was up to customers to supply their own noodles.

With several inches of snow fallen Kansas City and the city devoting extra resources to getting the streets cleared, trash and recycling will not be picked up on Monday, and Tuesday. Instead, homes with Monday and Tuesday collection days should save their waste for next week,
