Over 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, including nearly a million Jews. On the day of liberation 80 years ago, only 7,000 were saved.

The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops was observed at the site of the former Nazi death camp.

Holocaust Memorial Day is held yearly on 27 January to commemorate the memory of the six million Jews and other groups who the Nazis murdered in the Holocaust.

Some of the few remaining survivors of Auschwitz returned to the Nazi death camp on Monday, condemning a "huge rise" in anti-Semitism on the 80th anniversary of its liberation.
