A stampede broke out at the Sangam ahead of the second 'Amrit Snan' on Muni Amavasya. Several are feared dead or missing after a huge number of devotees rushed to take 'Amrit Snan' on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious dates in the Hindu calendar. Reportedly, the incident took place at around 2 am.

An eyewitness said chaos at the Sangam was caused by the crowd not knowing where to go and hidden dustbins, which made people trip and lose balance.

Following the stampede, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad said that the seers have called off their Mauni Amavasya's Amrit Snan. Jagatguru Rambhadracharya also appealed to devotees to take the holy dip at the nearest ghat on the Ganga and not come to the Sangam Nose.
