The National Weather Service issued an urgent flood warning at 1:14 a.m. July 4th. Camp personnel did not start moving girls to safety for at least 46 minutes.

More than an hour passed between Camp Mystic receiving a severe flood warning and a decision to evacuate young campers asleep in cabins by the Guadalupe River.

More than 700 people were at the camp when the July Fourth floods hit Kerr County in Central Texas. KERRVILLE, Texas — At the all-girls Camp Mystic, along the Guadalupe River, five campers are still not accounted for in the aftermath of historic and deadly floods that have upended life in the Texas Hill Country.

As the search for five missing Camp Mystic campers and one counselor continues, the summer camp community in Texas and across the country is offering support for a place that has become special to thousands of girls over the years.

The company's chairman announced Friday that 8-year-old Renee Smajstrla died in the Kerr County floods. She was a camper at Camp Mystic. The camp has lost 27 campers and counselors in the flood. The jewelry company -- which was founded in Kerrville -- has pledged one million dollars in flood aid and relief efforts.

Kerrville musician Robert Earl Keen plans to offer his own contribution to the healing process. He was slated for a concert in the city’s Louise Hays Park on July 4, but the torrential rains and record flooding made that impossible.

Generations of parents sent their daughters to the Christian camp on the Guadalupe. It suffered floods over the years but no one foresaw tragedy.
