The San Diego Padres traded Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek to the Kansas City Royals for a catcher who is under team control through 2029.

The Padres are acquiring catcher Freddy Fermin from the Royals, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Right-handers Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek are headed to Kansas City in exchange for Fermin.

Mitch Keller was the more popular name in trade rumors among Pirates starting pitchers, but Falter is instead the first rotation piece to be on the move. The left-hander has been a quality back-end starter this season with a 3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 70:39 K:BB across 113.1 innings.

Falter is the third pitcher Kansas City acquired on Thursday. Earlier in the day, the Royals made a deal with the San Diego Padres, trading 30-year-old catcher Freddy Fermin for 25-year-old pitcher Ryan Bergert and 28-year-old Stephen Kolek.
