Gov. Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency Sunday for a wildfire burning in northwest Colorado.

On Monday, Gov. Jared Polis declared a state of disaster for the LeRoux fire in Delta County after the sheriff's office requested assistance, saying it has grown beyond the capacity of local firefighters.

Two wildfires that started over the weekend on Colorado’s Western Slope have consumed more than 20,000 acres and destroyed at least three buildings, according to fire officials.
