The northern lights may be on display for some northern Midwestern states Monday, thanks to a geomagnetic storm warning.

If it hits as night falls in the U.S. on Monday, aurora could be visible as far south as Iowa and Pennsylvania. If it arrives earlier, northern Europe could see the display.

Though some in the Midwest got to see the northern lights phenomenon earlier this year thanks to a historic geomagnetic storm, another forecasted storm could bring sights of the aurora borealis back to the Chicago area.

A powerful geomagnetic storm is poised to descend over Earth on Sept. 16, potentially bringing aurora borealis to regions like Pennsylvania, Iowa and Oregon, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced — but it appears that some Californians were already lucky enough to witness it just outside their doorstep last week.

Vibrant auroras could be visible as far south as Oregon and Pennsylvania tonight as Earth reels from a "strong" G3-class geomagnetic storm. However, the nearly full Harvest Moon may complicate viewing opportunities.
