Engineers at New Jersey Transit went on strike early Friday, bringing trains on the nation’s third largest commuter rail service to a halt.

NJ Transit workers are on strike, following a yearslong battle over wages. Mark Wallace, national president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, confirmed that the union and NJ Transit didn’t reach an agreement on a new labor contract Thursday night,

It will be the state’s first transit strike in more than 40 years and comes a month after union members overwhelmingly rejected a labor agreement with management.
