Blank radar screens. Broken air traffic equipment. Flights in an out of Newark Airport delayed or canceled. Is it safe to fly here?

Staff shortages and equipment failures at Newark Liberty International Airport have raised safety concerns in recent weeks.

The airport, which serves as a critical transportation hub for the New York metropolitan area, has seen more than 1,400 flights delayed or canceled during the seven-day crisis. On the worst days, over 40% of flights were delayed and 20% canceled entirely, creating ripple effects throughout the U.S. air transportation network.

With summer travel season approaching, the crisis at the New Jersey airport could mean weeks, if not months, of misery for travelers.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill wrote to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy about when he expects to meet needed levels of air traffic controllers for Newark.
