The Trump administration has violated federal privacy laws when it turned over Medicaid data on millions of enrollees to federal deportation officials last month, says California Attorney General Rob Bonta.

The lawsuit argues that federal law only allows states and the federal government to share Medicaid enrollees’ personal data if necessary to run the program or to identify fraud.

Twenty state attorneys general are seeking to block the Trump administration from sharing personal health data with the Department of Homeland Security for immigration enforcement in a lawsuit to be filed Tuesday.
