Extreme heat has smashed temperature records across Europe in recent days, fueling wildfires. Weather forecaster Meteo France said in an update that "unprecedented maximum temperatures, often 12 degrees above normal levels" were set earlier in the week.

Extreme heat is hitting both coasts, bringing dangerously high temperatures to the Northeast, Northwest and Southwest. In the Northeast, heat advisories are in place for parts of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and upstate New York. Augusta, Maine, hit a daily high temperature of 98 degrees on Monday.

Wildfires burned in parts of Europe on Tuesday as millions of people across the continent struggled to adapt to the new reality: record summer heat. Temperatures in some areas soared past 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
